Simon Winsnes

Week 3

History meant little to Valley Huskers players on August 18, 2018 when the Okanagan Sun visited Exhibition Stadium. To rookie defensive back Simon Winsnes (Sturgeon Creek HS, Winnipeg) it probably meant less as he likely wasn’t born when the Fraser Valley franchise was born in 1999 and subsequently drop 30 straight games to the Sun the next 19 seasons.

This Saturday night saw the upstart Huskers leading the Sun 15-7 in the third quarter and the Sun offense driving.  Winsnes put the nail in the coffin when he picked off the Sun quarterback and took the ball back 50 yards to the end zone to give his club an insurmountable 22-7 lead. He chipped in another 5 tackles and a fumble recovery on the night on the way to defensive player of the week honours.

Overall a solid night capped off by one of the single biggest plays in the history of the Huskers franchise courtesy Simon Winsnes.
