Week Ten  – Rewind

The Okanagan Sun win over the Westshore Rebels last Saturday night gave them first place in the 2018 standings. It was the 20th time in their history that they have finished in top spot. Next closest is the Vancouver Blue Bombers (1947-1978) finished in first 16 times. Talking about the Sun, last week saw them also set a BCFC game record for the most safeties in a game when they scored 5. The old mark of 4 was also a Sun record that was set in 2015. As a team the Sun also set a new BCFC season record for blocked kicks in a season with 12. The Sun had the old record of 11 that they set in 2013. The final season team record was a new Sun record for fumble returns in a season. This year they recovered 21 fumbles that bettered their old record of 20, that they established in 2010.

The Valley Huskers saw their name entered in the BCFC Record Book this year and their 6-win 4 loss record coming of a 0-fer in 2017, was the second-best turn-around in BCFC history. Their 12-point swing was second only to the 13-point swing of the 1986-1987 Victoria Payless and the 2015-2016 Westshore Rebels. The Payless team coached by former BCFC President and CJFL Commissioner Doug Ferne went from an 0-8 record in 1986 to a 6-3-1 record in 1987. The 2015 and 2016 Rebels coached by JC Boice saw an improvement from 2-8 record in 2015 to an 8-1-1 in 2016. Congratulations to Huskers coach Bob Reist on the turn-around. The Huskers also set a new BCFC record for the fewest times getting sacked in a season. Based on a minimum of 250 pass attempts on the season, the Huskers were only sacked 7 times in 377 pass attempts. The old record was 8 that the Vancouver Island Raiders took in 2011. Huskers also set a new team record for passing yards in a season with 2,885 on 197 completions in 377 attempts. The old record was 2,500 yards in 2016.

The Langley Rams’ win over Kamloops on Saturday was their 200th in franchise history. It took them 346 games to reach the milestone. They join the Okanagan Sun (292 wins) and Vancouver Meralomas (200 wins) as the only BCFC teams to reach 200 victories. The Rams also set a new passing record this year with 2,765 yards on 195 completions in 330 attempts. The old team record was 2669 that was set in 2005.

Husker Brandon Poulin continues his assault on the Huskers record book as he finishes the year with a new team record for pass receptions 63, and yards 878. His 63 receptions are the 6th most in a season in BCFC history. Brandon also set a new All-Purpose Yardage record for the Huskers. He put up 1,847 yards, that beat the old mark of 1,625 that running back Matt Medwick established in 2000. Brandon had 17 rush yards, 878 pass receiving yards, 400 punt and missed field goal return yards and 552 in kickoff return yardage.

Huskers quarterback Julian Wytinck also set some new passing record for the Huskers as he set a new yardage record of 2,745 which beat the old record of 2,500 in 2016 and along that way Julian set a new pass completion record. He completed 189 pass which broke the old record of 178 (Noah Falconer 2016). His 189 completions is 2nd most ever in the BCFC. The record is 213 that Stephen Schuweiler of the Kamloops Broncos completed in 2015.

Langley Rams quarterback Duncan Little set a new Rams record for pass completions in a season. This year Duncan hit on 187 passes that broke the old record of 163 that former UBC Head Coach Shawn Olson completed in 1995.

Okanagan Sun punter Isaac Wegner punted 4 times on Saturday. That gives him 92 punts on the season, which ties the BCFC record for the most punts in a season. He is tied with Don Feilding of the 1984 Renfrew Trojans.

Vancouver Island Raiders defensive back Gevhahn McNalley-Hardisty intercepted three passes against the Valley Huskers last week. That gives him a league leading 8 on the season. The 8 interceptions ties a Vancouver Island Raiders season record. He is now tied with his current defensive coordinator Karim Maher.
