Week Nine  – Rewind

This past weekend the B.C. Football Hall of Fame announced the 2018 Induction Class. This class is well represented by current and former BCFC Members. The Vancouver Island Raiders organization is being honoured with The Special Award. “This is a special recognition award that is presented from time to time, and does not occur every year,” said the chairman of the board Scott Ackles. “It’s presented to an individual or organization who has made a significant contribution to football in British Columbia who would not otherwise qualify for induction into the B.C. Football Hall of Fame.” The Special Award winners must exemplify great character and dedication and provide inspiration to present and future generations.

Inducted as Athletes are Mike Cacic, who had success with the B.C. Lions from 1957-67. Mike was a former BCFC member with the Vancouver Meralomas and C.Y.O. Red Raiders from 1954 through 1956. Also inducted as an Athlete is former B.C. Lions / Saskatchewan Roughriders, Nick Hebeler. Nick played with the Lions from 1979-1985 and with the Riders in 1986 and ’87. Nick played in the BCFC with the 1978 Renfrew Trojans.

Inducted as Amateur Athletes are J.R. Davies, who played with the Tri-City Bulldogs in 2000 before finding success at SFU. As a QB with the Bulldogs, J.R. was good on 44 of 66 passes for 212 yards and 1 TD. Also inducted as an Amateur Athlete is Akbal Singh. Akbal who had a great university career with UBC, played with the Renfrew / Vancouver Trojans from 1992-1995. During his time with the Trojans, Akbal, a running back rushed for 2890 yards on 509 carries and scored 20 touchdowns. Akbals 509 carries is still third best all-time in the BCFC.

Inducted in the Officials category is Wayne Steele. A familiar face for many years officiating BCFC games, Wayne also was a one-time member of the BCFC when he played for the Marpole Athletics / Colts in 1957 and 1958.

Linebacker Dawson Davis of the Valley Huskers set a defensive points record, after recording 20 points in the Huskers win over the Rebels. Dawson now has 148 points, which breaks the old record of 128 which he was tied with David Bosch from 2008. Dawson also built on his team record for tackles on the year. He now has 60, which interestingly leaves him one tackle behind his coach Bob Reist. Bob had 61 tackles for the Abbotsford Air Force in 2002. The BCFC record for the most tackles in a season is 82 which Renfrew Trojans Jeff Stanford set in 1984

Sun punter Isaac Wegner punted 11 times in the game Sunday against the Broncos. That gives Isaac 88 punts on the year, which sets a new Sun record for the most punts in a season. The old record of 77 was set by Jason Attwood in 1993. The BCFC record is 92 that Don Fielding of the Renfrew Trojans set in 1984.

The Valley Huskers scored on two kickoff returns and a fumble recovery against the Rebels Saturday. That is the first time in their history that they’ve scored three non-offensive touchdowns in a game

The Westshore Rebels, with the loss last week to the Huskers, were officially eliminated from the playoffs. They become the first team in BCFC history to miss the playoffs after finishing in first place the previous season.
