Week 7 Musings

The dictionary defines the word mess as “a situation or state of affairs that is confused or full of difficulties.” That sort of describes the current BCFC standings as just 2 points separates 1st to 5th place and 4 of those teams control their own destiny to finish in first spot.

In this case a “mess” is a really good thing. BCFC Monday Musings for week 7…

Dom Abassi’s week 6 preview suggested that a Huskers second loss to the Langley Rams might cause some second guessing of the legitimacy of the Valley Huskers first place status. Well, the Huskers did drop the game to the Rams but after the way they moved the ball against the Rams defense it’s pretty clear that 4-2 team is legitimate in every sense.

Now that the Sun seems to have it’s offense moving again can they stop shooting off their touchdown cannon when the team scores a single point?

I didn’t catch much of the Rebels/Broncos game but the pass catching observed in the other 2 games was as good as you will see in junior football. There are some exceptional receivers at the top end of the talent pool this year.

Watching Dom’s coaches interviews last week one had to feel for the Sun’s Ben Macauley and Broncos’ Brad Yamaoka. Ben is in Kelowna where coaches are expected to win and obviously was feeling some pressure when he was very un-Macauley like in his criticism of the Langley Rams talent level last week. You could sense the angst continue over to his talk with Dom. In the case of Yamaoka, his club continues to struggle in a big way, and while the expectations in Kamloops may not be as lofty as they are in Kelowna, it’s still junior sports where winning is very important to fan support and attracting sponsors.

A better week for Ben after a win, while Brads squad continues to be the team on the outside looking in at an exciting 2018 season. We need to remember that our head coaches are doing this for essentially no compensation considering how much work is involved and how all eyes are on them when things don’t go well. It’s not fair and a bit hard to watch when really good men like Ben and Brad are all alone on an island over a football game.

Game of the Week

That’s it, no more game of the week segment in Musings. What last year was usually a no brainer most weeks is pretty impossible in 2018 because of how tight the teams are and the pretty significant implications of more than one game every week. Officially we are re-branding “Game of the Week” to “This weekend” (pretty original huh?)

  • VI Raiders 4-2 (1st place) @ Kamloops Broncos 0-6 (6th place)

As much as 4 other teams would love to see the Broncos upset the Raiders it’s just not going to happen as the one thing it seems that we can count on this year is the Broncos struggling for a win. It’s a long road trip for the Raiders but they are too balanced on both sides of the ball for the Broncos to handle so the only real hope the Broncos have is that the Raiders overlook them. With so much at stake for the islanders I just don’t see that happening.

Raiders win 37-8 to retain at least a share of first place

  • Langley Rams 3-3 (5th place) @ Westshore Rebels 3-2-1 (4th place)

The 4th place Rebels already have a win over the Rams back in week one. This game is obviously massive for both clubs as the loser stays out or falls out of the playoffs if they were starting now.

I just don’t think this is a good match up for the Rebels both defensively as they will have a difficult time handling the Rams passing attack and offensively protecting their quarterbacks Ashton Mackinnon and Mason Brown. If the Rebels come away with the W it will because either of these two passers, or both of them kept the Rams defence off balance with their feet.

Rams 27 Rebels 18

  • Valley Huskers 4-2 (1st place) @ Okanagan Sun 3-2-1 (3rd place)

If this was a poker game the Huskers would see the Sun’s Kelton Kouri and Jesse Amankwaa and raise them a Julian Wytinck and Brandon Poulin and Anthony Dyck.

The Huskers won’t be able to run the ball against a tough front 7 and probably won’t even try, especially after watching game film of the Raiders success against the Sun secondary Sunday. Conversely the Sun offense is suddenly showing some life with quarterback Jacob Loucks under centre and will be looking to run the ball down the throat of the Huskers defence now that the run game doesn’t have to stand alone.

I said up above that the Huskers are legit, they are, but this week they are up against a serious case of momentum and confidence in a Sun club coming off a critical win over a first-place team. Look for the Sun to knock off a top dog again to vault into 2nd place.

Sun 30 Huskers 23
