6 Games to watch

Last week we put up a poll on the BCFC Facebook page asking what games junior football fans were looking forward to most this season. The 6 possible games suggested were based on my personal opinion of ones I have circled on my calendar. It’s easy to look at opening weekend as games we want to see, and battles between teams that are presumed to be heavy weights are a natural.

Ranking them in my personal preference (that admittedly isn’t written in stone), here we go for a Monday Musings…

  • #6 August 25th Valley Huskers @ Kamloops Broncos

All three games on the August 25th weekend made my list for three different sets of intriguing situations. I called this one the battle of the underdogs as they are the two teams that didn’t make the play-offs last season and will be looking to push their way into the post season in 2018.

I think it’s safe to say that the team that loses this game likely is going to be on the outside of the post season in 2018, unless more than one of the 4 play-off teams from last season ends up taking a step backwards.

Is this a pair of underdogs or two teams that make some noise this year? Either way, it will be interesting to see the improvements made this off season in both cases.

  • #5 August 25th Okanagan Sun @ Langley Rams

The Sun and Rams have a long-standing rivalry, one the Sun have largely dominated (during the regular season at least by a 41-14-1 margin), but the games usually come right down to the wire. This week 4 tilt comes with plenty of football still to be played but the winner would be gaining a leg up for sure.

The fact that the Rams have a new head coach who owns his own dominating record against the Sun makes this one even more worth your time.

  • #4 August 11 Langley Rams @ Valley Huskers

These two clubs are just up the road from each other and should be big time rivals because of this close proximity. The fact that the Huskers for years have been on the wrong end of lopsided scores has dulled the rivalry somewhat.

The Huskers for the first time in years have a capable head coach who has the community of Chilliwack and players from outside the area buying in to his vision. It would be hard to convince this outsider that the Huskers win this one, but I’ll be watching to see if they are turning the corner as all indications point to.

  • #3 August 25th VI Raiders @ Westshore Rebels

These two organizations are like oil and water, you simply can’t have a “games to watch” list without at least one of their meetings included. The fact that the Raiders upset the Rebels at Westhills Stadium in last season’s Cullen Cup (Raiders head coach Doug Hocking will still argue that wasn’t an upset) makes this one all the more worth the price of admission.

Plus Rebels head coach Charly Cardilicchia will likely say something in the media during the week to try and get under the Raiders skin just to add fuel to the fire…

  • #2 October 13th  Westshore Rebels @ Okanagan Sun

This game was a no brainer to make the list. If this game isn’t the biggest game of the final weekend of the regular season there will have been some major surprises during the regular season.

This game will likely make the difference in one of these teams having a home field advantage through one and possibly two round of the BCFC play-offs.

  • Aug 18th Langley Rams at VI Raiders

Matt “Snoop” Blokker returns to the BCFC after 4 years as the head man of the Calgary Colts of the PFC. During his previous life as head coach of the VI Raiders, he for all intents and purposes owned the BCFC. When the Rams and the Raiders butt heads the games are usually crucial as it’s a rare occasion when they are separated by more than 2 points in the standings.

The winningest coach in conference history returning to his old stomping grounds just adds to the storyline.

The opinions expressed in Monday Musings are not necessarily those of the BCFC or its member teams
