Prince George Kodiaks Coming to the BCFC in 2022

On February 8th, 2022, the British Columbia Football Conference Board of Directors voted unanimously to accept the Prince George Kodiaks as full members of the BCFC. The 2022 season will be the Kodiaks inaugural playing season.

The process began back in the fall of 2019, with a lot of dialogue that has happened since then getting us to where we are today.  The Kodiak organization has been built with a strong foundation of their board of directors and board of governors. They have seen a tremendous amount of support and enthusiasm from the City of Prince George and local business community. The Kodiaks will play their home games at Masich Stadium, and their teams colors will be black and yellow.

Off the field, the Kodiaks will be led by former Regina Rams standout Craig Briere, as he will serve as the Club President in 2022. Craig has a lot of ties to the Prince George community, and recalls his Junior playing days with the fondest of memories. "Junior football was a big part of my life to this day, and the lessons, values and experiences I learned and developed there have stayed with me as an adult," noted Briere. "I am excited to bring the BCFC and the CJFL to the Prince George community, where we will help young men grow as athletes and individuals. Our goal is to create a culture here, and have this experience help players develop and grow and be outstanding adults," Briere added.

Taking the reins for the inaugural season on the field is former CFL standout Keon Raymond, who had an outstanding career with the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts. Keon echoed many of Craig's goals for the Kodiaks, especially when it comes to culture. "It is important to us to build something here in Prince George on and off the football field", said Raymond. "We want our players to come in here with the right attitude, work ethic and commitment on the field, and also be outstanding people off the field. We want to support our athletes as best we can, and ensure they love their time with the Kodiaks long after they are done playing," continued Raymond.

The BCFC which now has seven teams across the province of British Columbia is part of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL), and competes annually for the National Championship. The Conferences Board of Directors sees Prince George as an exciting opportunity for football in BC. "We see Prince George as an exciting new market, and we can't wait to bring Junior football to the North," said BCFC President Tyler McLaren. "For us in BC, this is a unique opportunity to grow grassroots football in a region that needs to be developed further, and we feel the BCFC and the Kodiaks can do just that," McLaren noted. With any expansion, comes challenges and obstacles, but McLaren is confident in the direction the league is going with the addition of the Kodiaks. "I see the opportunity here, and believe in Craig and his team in Prince George. Of course there are things we need to navigate through, but I believe all good opportunities often present challenges, and we can overcome them and really grow the sport," McLaren continued.

Although the schedule has not been confirmed at this time, it is expected the first week of action in the BCFC will occur the weekend of July 23rd. It will no doubt be an exciting 2022 season in Prince George as the Kodiaks kick off their inaugural season.
