Week 2 – BCFC Players of the Week
Offense – Nick Wenman, QB, Okanagan Sun – There are many who will debate what is the toughest position in sports, with answers like goalie in hockey, pitcher in baseball, and QB in football, usually at the top of most debaters lists. No question, the signal caller in football faces the pressure, especially when making your first start, and filling in for your injured pivot partner. That is what happened Saturday night at the Apple Bowl, where 3rd year pivot Nick Wenman filled in for an injured Keith Zyla. Wenman, who played his High School football at Cold Lake High School in Alberta, completed 20 of his 30 passes for 278 yards on the night. Nick also avoided game changing mistakes, throwing no interceptions while also tossing 3 touchdown passes along the way. The Sun offence didn’t miss a beat, as they improved to 2-0 on the season with an impressive 36-0 victory over their interior rivals from Kamloops.
Defense – Kyle Clarot, DB, Langley Rams – “Records are meant to be broken” is how the old saying goes, and a Rams rookie defensive back came dangerously close to doing just that on Saturday night against the Valley Huskers. Clarot, who played for Langley Stampeders Midget program last season, returned an interception 106 yards for a touchdown, sealing the Rams 39-0 victory over the Huskers and improving their 2017 record to 1-1. Clarot, who plays halfback for the Rams stingy defence, also chipped in with 2 tackles and a knockdown in just his second BCFC game. Kyle also was solid in his debut with the Rams, when they hosted the VI Raiders in Week 1. The interception return was the third longest in BCFC history. Nicely done “rook!”
Special Teams – Nate Anderson, Returner, Okanagan Sun – Coaches always use the saying “win the field position battle,” and one way to tilt the advantage in your favor is through the return game. On Saturday night, the Sun got the yards they needed to shorten the field for the offence courtesy of Nate Anderson, and his 95 yards on 5 punt returns. The second year, 18 year old Sun receiver/returner continues to make a name for himself both on offence and on the return game. Nate was also in discussion for the Offensive POW, as he hauled in 7 catches for 129 yards and 1 TD. Look for big things from the talented Anderson as the BCFC season continues.
