BC Lions Players of the Week

The British Columbia Football Conference Cullen Cup championship took place Saturday night at Westhills Stadium in Victoria. The Westshore Rebels captured its second title with a 32-21 win over the defending champion Okanagan Sun.

The Rebels host the defending national champion Saskatoon Hilltops in the Canadian Bowl Saturday, Nov 12 @ 1PM pacific time. Game will be streamed live on PPV at bcfootballconference.com

Players of the game in the Cullen Cup

Offensive player of the game

Ashton Mackinnon / QB / Westshore Rebels

9 of 18 passing 173 yards & 3 TDS / 0 interceptions

12 carries for 82 yards

Ashton Mackinnon led his Rebels with his arm and feet in a masterful performance Saturday evening. The 6’7, 240 pound Victoria native kept the Okanagan Sun defense off balance all game in a general-like performance.

Defensive player of the week

Juslain Makambo / LB / Westshore Rebels

4 tackles / 1 assisted tackle / 1 pass defense / 1 interception

The Rebels defense was questioned as a potential area of concern heading into the title game as it had given up 268 points during the regular season. Led by the stellar play of Juslain Makambo, the Rebels shut out the Sun for almost two and a half quarters while giving its offense a short field in building an insurmountable 32-0 lead.

Critics silenced.

Special Teams player of the week

Pierre Luc-Lord / Okanagan Sun

4 kick-off returns for 90 yards

The Okanagan Sun found themselves playing catch up early as the Rebels built a 25-0 first half lead. The efforts of Pierre Luc-Lord kept the situation from getting more out of hand as his return efforts in the first half kept his offense out of the shadow of it’s own goal posts. While it didn’t result in points, the game of field position kept the game from getting more out of hand and ultimately made for an exciting second half as the Sun mounted a comeback that fell just short.
