Reporters view

Every week reporters from BCFC cities give their two cents on how the teams are going to fair this week. Thanks to Marty Hastings (Kamloops this Week), Warren Henderson (Kelowna Daily Courier), Eric Welsh (Chilliwack Progress), Gary Ahuja (Langley Times) and Don Descoteau (Goldstream Gazette)

We know what is settled and what is up in the air this weekend. Let’s take a look at what the reporters think.

Warren Henderson is away this week

Huskers @ Broncos

Marty; The Broncos would love to post their first home win of the season in their last game of the year at Hillside Stadium. The Huskers are in town, so they should get it done.

Kamloops 35 Valley 10

Eric; The Broncos beat the Huskers 30-23 in Chilliwack two weeks ago and should do better at Hilltop Stadium. There’s been no lack of try in the Huskers this year but they seem destined for another 0-10 finish.

Kamloops 30 Huskers 13

Gary; Both teams are coming off losses with the Huskers losing to the Winnipeg Rifles in the league’s other crossover game while the Broncos were within 10 points of the Rams in the fourth quarter before the game got away from them.

The teams met a few weeks ago with the Broncos having to erase a 10-point half-time deficit to win by a touchdown.

Kamloops 21 Huskers 17

Don; The league’s also-rans meet again in the battle to avoid the ignominy of last place in the BCFC. Ironically, these teams have the most prolific passers in the league, the Huskers’ Noah Falconer (BCFC-best 128 completions, 15 TDs and 1,774 yds.) and Kamloops’ Colby Henkel (1,506 yds. 14 TDs). While this game presents Falconer and the Huskers’ best and likely only real chance to record a victory this season, the defensively better Broncos will have pride on the line playing at home and come away with a 30-20 win.

Kamloops 30 Valley 20

Sun @ Raiders

Marty; The Sun were humbled last weekend, but expect them to bounce back with a road victory this weekend.

Sun 25 Raiders 20

Eric; Who’s going to be grumpier than the Sun after the beating they took last weekend? A 58-2 home field loss to the Saskatoon Hilltops should be all the motivation the Sun need against a mediocre Raider crew.

Okanagan 38 Raiders 17

Gary; The Raiders are coming off a huge 25-25 tie with the Westshore Rebels while Okanagan suffered a massive loss to the Saskatoon Hilltops in a crossover game with the Prairie Football Conference.

While the Raiders have played better as of late — they nearly rallied from a 17-point hole the week before against the Rams — expect Okanagan to get back in the win column in week eight.

Okanagan 35 Raiders 17

Don; The Sun are no doubt licking their wounds after being swamped 58-2 by the Saskatoon Hilltops in an inter-conference matchup last weekend in Kelowna. In losing two straight Okanagan has shown its mortality. But the talented Sun will be back with a vengeance and take their frustrations out on the Raiders, whose tie last weekend clinched them a playoff spot. The Raiders, led by RB Nate Berg (687 yds.) and talented QB Jacob Laberge (1,477 passing yds.), have also been decent defensively of late and will keep Okanagan to within two scores, but the Sun will post the W here

Sun 31 Raiders 17

Rebels @ Rams

Marty; The Rams are rolling and should be able to sneak past the Rebels in a close one at McLeod

Langley 34 Westshore 31

Eric; Easily the game of the week. Langley’s league-leading D will have its hands full with Jamel Lyles and the Rebels attack, but playing at home should give them the edge they need in this battle of BCFC titans.

Langley 30 Westshore 27

Gary; The Rebels racked up nearly 300 yards along the ground in a week one victory over the Rams, one of only three times Langley’s league-leading rush defence has allowed an opponent to crack triple digits.

Westshore is coming off a tie to the Raiders in week seven while Langley beat Kamloops.

If the Rams can contain the potent Rebels rushing attack, new No. 1 quarterback Tommy Robertson — fresh off a BCFC offensive player of the week award — should be able to guide the Rams to a victory.

Langley 27 Westshore 23

Don; Well, all of a sudden things are getting rather interesting in the top half of the BCFC. Last weekend the Rebels had to claw their way into a 25-25 tie with arch-rivals the Vancouver Island Raiders, which makes this weekend a must-win situation if Westshore hopes to finish atop the standings. The Rams, led by BCFC players of the week QB Tommy Robertson (16/27 passing 3 TDs against Kamloops) and slippery kick returner Jordan Lund (ran a missed FG back 111 yds. for TD) have won two straight and come in with some momentum, not to mention a very real hope of finishing first. We thought the previous Rebels-Sun game was the matchup of the year, and it was great, but this game in Langley could go further toward determining the regular season champion. The Rebels’ pair of QB Ashton Mackinnon and WR Nathaniel Pinto is turning heads of late and relieving pressure on league-leading running back Jamel Lyles and backfield mate Trey Campbell to carry the team. Westshore may be out for blood after getting a scare in Nanaimo, but the Rams will prevail.
