Week 6 reporters picks

Every week reporters from BCFC cities give their two cents on how the teams are going to fair this week. Thanks to Marty Hastings (Kamloops this Week), Warren Henderson (Kelowna Capital News), Eric Welsh (Chilliwack Progress), Gary Ahuja (Langley Times) and Don Descoteau (Goldstream Gazette)

You can argue a good case for an upset in all three games this weekend. The Rebels are huge favorites against the Huskers but home and home series are always tricky. In Kamloops they are facing a Raiders club that has yet to find its rhythm. Add the long road trip and its hard not to give an edge to the Broncos. The most observers will say the Sun are the better of the teams between them and the Rams, statistically there is little to choose between them. Plus, the game is in Langley.

This is the toughest week yet.

Huskers @ Rebels

Marty; The Rebels should handle the Huskers.  41-10.

Warren; The winless Huskers put up a fight at home against the Rebels last weekend, but will be hard pressed to stay close in Victoria on Saturday. Westshore takes it 46-7.

Eric; Chilliwack did a better job than anyone has so far this season limiting Jamel Lyles. But the Rebels still tagged them for 47 points. Westshore gets the Huskers at home and should roll to an easy win. Rebels 51 vs Huskers 13

Gary; In a week five rematch, expect the Rebels to continue running the ball behind the league’s leading rushing attack as the duo of Jamel Lyles (794 yards) and Trey Campbell (461 yards) sit one-two in yardage. The pair are averaging a combined 9.4 yards per rush and have scored a dozen touchdowns.

The Huskers are showing improvement but the offence is still one-dimensional — quarterback Noah Falconer leads the league with 1,233 passing yards and 10 touchdowns — compared to less than two yards per carry on 112 yards rushing on 51 attempts. Rebels 44 Huskers 20

Don; In this second half of a home-and-home between the Rebels and the Huskers, not a lot will change other than the venue. The Rebels may have even more momentum, having indirectly hosted the CIS exhibition game between Vanier Cup champion UBC Thunderbirds and the Manitoba Bisons at Westhills Stadium the night before. Expect the locals to come out fast and build a healthy lead before locking into cruise control on defence, which will let the Huskers post a couple of scores, at least one of which will come from leading receiver and freshly minted BCFC offensive player of the week Blake Draper (124 yds., 3 TDs vs Rebels last week). The Rebels have given up their fair share of points to date, but have scored a ton as well.

Expect this one to be lopsided, with Westshore taking it 42-17 and grabbing sole possession of second place (see below).

Raiders @ Broncos

Marty; I’m far from confident in this pick, but I’ll give the Broncos one last chance against a team not named the Valley Huskers. They’ve been a different team at home this season and they have to win this game to maintain hope of reaching the post-season. Henkel has a big game and the Broncos win 31-28.

Warren; The Broncos play their best at home and are due for their first win of the season, while the Raiders continue to struggle with inconsistency. Kamloops gets its first W of 2016 with a 24-20 victory.

Eric; The Broncos season is spiraling out of control, but they've got a chance to pick up their first win against a mediocre Raider squad. Here's my upset special of the week as the Broncos top VI.

Broncos 30 vs Raiders 27

Gary; After back-to-back losses, look for the Raiders to return to the win column against the winless Broncos. The Raiders scored twice in the opening quarter and then were blanked over the final three quarters to lose 29-14 to the Rams. The Broncos were down just 10 points at the half before losing 31-0 to the Sun.

Raiders 34 Broncos 20

Don; Last year these teams were both better, but they’ve been replaced in the upper half of the standings by the likes of Langley and Westshore. That said, this should be a good game and offers the Broncos their best chance at a win until they play the Huskers. Statistically the Raiders have the edge, led by running back Nathan Berg (424 yards, 5.2 yds/carry), BCFC-leading receiver Dustin Rodriguez (487 yards, 28.6 yds/catch), and #2 punt returner Josh Paisley (393 yds., 13.1 yds/return). Kamloops has three receivers with over 200 yards in receptions; Brody Bernier, Broden Romanovitch and Colin Mather and a mobile passer in Colby Henkel (157 yds. rushing), plus the BCFC-leading five interceptions of Jordan Angove.

But the Raiders will take this one, 27-14.

Sun @ Rams

Marty; This should be a great tilt and the Rams will keep it close at home, but look for the Sun to stay undefeated on the campaign. 28-24.

Warren; The BCFC's top two teams go head-to-head in the marquee matchup of the weekend. The Rams, who have won four straight, will be looking to prove they belong on the same plane as the unbeaten defending champs. In a battle from start to finish, Langley prevails 29-27.

Eric; A titanic clash of BCFC heavyweights and the two stingiest defences in the league. A coin-flip game were it played at a neutral site, the Rams have the slight edge playing at home.

Rams 17 vs Sun 14

Gary; A battle of the league’s top two defenses as the Rams are surrendering 15.8 points per game and the Sun are giving up just 16.8. Three of Langley’s four victories have come against the two winless teams in the league so this will be a big test for the Rams. The Rams won a fourth straight game in week five, but after racking up yardage and points in the first four weeks, Langley was held to less than 300 yards and 30 points for the first time all season in their 29-14 win over the Raiders.

Okanagan is coming off a 31-0 victory over Kamloops which saw the team come up with five interceptions — including a pick-6 — and five quarterback sacks. Rams kicker Tiernan Docherty — the league’s special teams player of the week in three of the five weeks so far — has shown range and his foot will be the difference in a tight one.

Rams 28 Sun 27

Don; This will be the feature game of the week in the BCFC, pitting the potential finalists. The Sun eased up on the Broncos last weekend, rolling to a 31-0 win, while the Rams had their hands full with the Raiders in a 29-14 win. Hosting the game at McLeod Athletic Park will give Langley a slight edge before opening kickoff, but that will wear off once the Sun’s powerful offence, led by QB Foster Martens, top rusher Brendan Hansen (339 yds.) and short-range stud Kasey Russell (5 TDs) gets rolling. Langley has the league’s top kicker in Tiernan Docherty (13 FG, 63 pts.), a confident passer in Stephen Legare (58.2% completion rate, 93.2% rating) and talented receivers in Khalik Johnson (430 yds.) and Seye Akinsamni (359 yds.).

But the Sun will prevail in Langley, 34-17.
