Reporters from BCFC cities give their two cents on how the teams are going to fair this week. Thanks to Marty Hastings (Kamloops this Week), Warren Henderson (Kelowna Daily Courier), Eric Welsh (Chilliwack Progress), Gary Ahuja (Langley Times) and Don Descoteau (Goldstream Gazette)

This weekend brings on the mid-way point of the season. The game of the week is in Nanaimo as the Raiders and Langley Rams battle.

Let’s see what the reporters think this weekend.

Westshore Rebels @ Valley Huskers

Marty; The Rebels used their dynamic running attack to scoot past the Broncos last weekend and should scamper by the Huskers in Chilliwack on Saturday

Rebels 41-20

Warren; The winless Huskers are yielding almost 50 points per game, while the Rebels are putting up close to 40 against their opponents. The basic math tells us all we need to know.

Rebels route the Huskers 46-13 for their fourth win of 2016.

Gary; The Huskers have shown a lot more fight the last two weeks and had the passing game going in week four’s loss to the Rams.

The Huskers did struggle with the Langley ground game, allowing the Rams backs to run for more than eight yards a carry. This week they will look to contain Westshore’s running back duo of Jamel Lyles (697 yards, 8.5 yards per carry, six touchdowns) and Trey Campbell (288 yards, 10.7 yards per carry, three touchdowns).

The Rebels rebounded from their first loss of the season by putting up 45 points in their victory over the Kamloops Broncos.

Westhore 48 Huskers 16

Don; The Rebels continue to show they are are a developing powerhouse in the BCFC and the Huskers will be the next team to be overwhelmed by their attack, led by league leading rusher and two-time offensive player of the week Jamel Lyles and Trey Campbell, and a well-oiled defence guided by last year’s BCFC champion coach Shane Beattie.

While they’ve had a few highlights from individuals this season, the Huskers will prove no match for the visitors on Saturday, losing 48-21.

Langley Rams @ VI Raiders

Marty; This should be a good one. I’ll take VI at home.

Raiders 31 Rams 26

Warren; The most evenly-matched and toughest pick of the weekend. The Raiders (2-2) are coming off an unsuccessful but game effort against the defending champion Okanagan Sun. The Rams are 3-1 but all three victories have come against the league's only two winless clubs. Look for the Raiders to feed off the hometown atmosphere at Caledonia Park and pull even with Langley for third place.

Raiders take it 31-25.

Gary; After playing the league’s two winless teams the last three weeks, the Rams get a much stiffer test against the Raiders in Nanaimo.

Langley moved the ball at will in week four with 583 yards of offence but did not capitalize as much as they could have. The team had 200 yards in penalties and turned the ball over five times (three fumbles, one interception and one turnover on downs).

The Raiders led the Sun 10-7 after one quarter and only trailed by seven points after three before eventually losing 37-19.

Langley will need to win the turnover battle as they have only generated 10 takeaways while giving the ball up 14 times. The differential is second worst in the league. By comparison, the Raiders are second in the league at +4.

Rams 38 Raiders 33

Don; This could prove to be the best game of the weekend. The high-scoring Rams show strength in various areas this year, including at quarterback, where Stephen Legare and Colby Peters are splitting the duties. Kicker Tiernan Docherty has been steady all season, winning a special teams player of the week award earlier this season, and gives the team chances to score anytime the Rams get in range. The Raiders, coming off a 37-19 loss to 4-0 Okanagan, are in a rebuilding phase, having lost some players from last year’s BCFC finalist to graduation. They’re not a team not to be taken lightly, however, but the status of starting quarterback Jake Laberge is uncertain after he received a lower body injury late in last weekend’s game.

Despite the Raiders enjoying home field advantage, Rams win a close one, 27-21.

Kamloops Broncos @ Okanagan Sun

Marty; The Broncos hung in with the Sun in their first meeting and Kamloops held its own last weekend against Westshore, but Okanagan should post another W in Kelowna on Saturday.

Okanagan 48 Kamloops 31

Warren; At 4-0 the Sun may soon be ripe for an upset, but not this weekend. The visiting 0-4 Broncos aren't quite ready to make that step, particularly under the Apple Bowl lights.

Sun's record stays spotless with a 38-15 win.

Gary; The Broncos put up 30-plus points for the second time in four games – both times against the league’s top two teams — but still could not come away with their first victory.

Kamloops played the Sun tough in week two, a 45-30 loss.

Sun 35 Broncos 24

Don; Their winless record may be a little misleading, as they’ve shown positive signs of growth and flashes of offensive brilliance, but the Broncos will be the latest whipping boys for the powerful Sun in Kelowna. This game will be a good illustration of the difference in level of the BCFC’s top team and a team trying desperately to gain a foothold.

Expect the Sun to cruise through this game, winning easily 52-18.
